About
Rêve d'un soir is a valse manouche by Dorado Schmitt, one of the leading gypsy-jazz composer-guitarists of the modern era — patriarch of the touring Schmitt dynasty and a fixture of the Django Reinhardt festival circuit. His waltzes are cornerstones of the contemporary manouche repertoire.
The sound — a romantic B minor with the trademark descending tonic line (BmMaj7–Bm7–Bm6), passing dominants (F♯7, B7, A7) and a lift into D and G major; elegant and sweeping.
Practising it — voice that Bm–BmMaj7–Bm7–Bm6 line cleanly, then drill B harmonic minor and the arpeggios over each dominant. Gypsy waltzes fly — build the 3/4 up slowly and evenly.
