About

Music by Isham Jones, lyrics by Gus Kahn, published in 1924. Jones' recording spent seven weeks at number one in 1925, and the song later titled a 1951 film biography of Kahn.

The sound — a mellow F major, famous for its long descending run of dominants (D7-G7-C7-F) and the plagal B♭-B♭m move that lends its gentle ache.

Practising it — great for chaining dominant arpeggios down the cycle: play D7, G7, C7 into F and connect them with guide tones. Then catch the B♭ to B♭m shift — that lowered note is the tune's sigh. Keep it easy and swinging.
