About
Music by Hoagy Carmichael, lyrics by Stuart Gorrell, written in 1930 and first recorded by Carmichael that year. Ray Charles' 1960 version became definitive and, in 1979, Georgia's official state song.
The sound — a tender F major ballad rich in ii-V motion, secondary dominants (A7, D7) and passing diminished colour that keep the harmony gently turning under a soulful melody.
Practising it — play it slow and vocal. Learn the ii-Vs and target chord tones so the line sings; let space and dynamics carry it. Aim to phrase like a singer, breathing between ideas.
