About
Written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II for the 1939 musical Very Warm for May, All the Things You Are outlived its flop show to become one of the essential jazz standards — a favourite test-piece for its harmony.
The sound — nominally A♭ major, but famous for modulating through several keys via ii–V chains (Fm–B♭m–E♭7–A♭, then on to C and E). The melody climbs while the ground shifts under it. Sophisticated, deeply satisfying to solo over.
Practising it — this is a changes workout. Learn each ii–V–I pocket by key, connecting arpeggios with guide-tone lines rather than scales. Slow the modulations right down until the key changes feel inevitable.
