About
Stomping at Decca is a Django Reinhardt original - a nod to his 1930s record label - recorded by the Quintette du Hot Club de France with Stéphane Grappelli in 1938.
The sound - an up-tempo G major swinger that cycles through ii-V pairs and a chain of dominants (E7-A7-D7), with a borrowed Cm6 and an E♭7 tritone sub adding spice.
Practising it - drill the G major scale, then arpeggiate the cycle-of-fifths dominants, connecting each 3rd to the next root. Bring out the Cm6 colour and keep the pompe crisp - this one lives at speed.
